Armstrong officially sets goal for Ironman

It’s official: Lance Armstrong will compete in Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, and he hopes the race will lead to bigger and better things.

According to a release Ironman made available Friday, Armstrong will race as a professional in the June 2 triathlon with a goal of qualifying for the Ironman World Championship, which takes place Oct. 13 on the Big Island.

Ironman 70.3 Hawaii features a 1.2-mile swim at Hapuna Beach State Park, a 56-mile bicycle ride on Queen Kaahumanu Highway and a 13.1-mile run on the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii grounds.

Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France champion, comes off a seventh-place finish at Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas. He clocked in at 3 hours, 54 minutes, 32 seconds.

Tim O’Donnell of Boulder, Colo., won the half-Ironman-distance race in 3:47:40.
